Expenses, splits & refunds
Choose who paid, divide costs fairly and correct an entry.
Who paid and who shares the cost?
Paid By is the person who covered the bill. Split between is the set of people responsible for the cost. These can be different: someone can pay for the group without participating in that particular expense.
- Open the Book and tap Add.
- Choose Expense and enter the amount and description.
- Set the payer and date, then choose the participants and split method.
- Review the individual shares and tap Save.
Example: Alex pays $90 for Alex, Sam and Jo, split equally. Each person’s cost is $30. With no other entries, Alex is owed $60, while Sam and Jo each owe $30.

Choose a split method
| Method | Use it when | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Equally | Everyone pays the same share. | Three people: $30 each. |
| Shares | People pay in relative units. | 2 shares and 1 share: $60 and $30. |
| Percentage | You know each person’s percentage. | 60% and 40%: $54 and $36. |
| Exact amounts | You know the specific amount for each person. | $50, $25 and $15. |
Percentages must add up to 100%; exact amounts must add up to the total. Leave people out if they do not share the cost. Check the displayed shares before saving.
If a total cannot be divided evenly into cents, one person’s share can differ by a cent. The individual shares still add up to the full amount.
Record a refund or returned deposit
- Tap Add in the Book and switch to Income.
- Enter the refund amount and description.
- Set Received By to the person who received the money.
- Choose who the refund belongs to and how it is split, then save.
What happens: income adjusts balances in the opposite direction to an expense. It shares money received for the group. For money one member pays another to settle a debt, use Record Payment instead.
Edit or delete an expense
Open the entry in Activity. Tap Edit to change its details and save. To remove an incorrect expense from the balances, use its delete action and confirm.
What happens: editing recalculates the shares and balances. A deleted expense stays visible as a crossed-out entry, with who deleted it, but no longer counts toward balances.
Where Restore is available on a deleted entry, restoring it makes it count again. For an entry from a Loop, a conflicting record for that period can prevent restoration; check the Loop’s history before recording it again.
Why didn’t my balance change?
Check who paid and who is included. If you paid and only you share the cost, there is no debt between members. Also check whether the entry is waiting to sync, has been deleted, or is offset by other expenses, income or repayments.
