Balances & repayments

Understand who owes whom and record money you have already paid back.

Read a balance

A balance is a person’s net position across the Book’s recorded expenses, income and repayments. Is owed means they should receive money; owes means they should pay money. Settled up means their net balance is zero.

Open the Book’s balance summary to see the Balances screen, including everyone’s totals and suggested payments.

Example: Alex paid $90 for three people equally. Before other entries, Alex is owed $60; Sam and Jo each owe $30. If Sam later pays a different group bill, the net amounts can change.

Understand suggested payments

Suggestions match people who owe money with people who are owed money to clear the Book’s net balances. They reflect the whole Book, so a suggested recipient may differ from the payer of one particular expense. Suggestions do not guarantee the smallest possible number of transfers.

Record a repayment

  1. Pay the other person outside LoopSplit, using cash, a bank transfer or another method you agree on.
  2. Open Balances and tap Record next to the relevant suggested payment. You can also use Record Other Payment to select the people yourself.
  3. Check who paid whom, the amount and date. If only part was paid, enter that smaller amount.
  4. Tap Record.

What happens: the repayment becomes an entry and adjusts both members’ balances. It does not transfer money, request a bank payment or confirm that a bank transfer succeeded.

Example: Sam owes Alex $30. Sam actually sends Alex $10, then records a $10 payment from Sam to Alex. Sam still owes $20. Recording $30 would incorrectly mark the whole amount as repaid.

Why is there still a balance?

A repayment may cover only part of what was owed. Other expenses may have been added, estimated amounts may have changed, or offline entries may still be waiting to sync. Check Activity for the amount, payer, recipient and date of each repayment.

If a payment was entered incorrectly, open the repayment entry to edit or delete it. Deleting it reverses the balance adjustment in LoopSplit; it does not reverse a real transfer.

Can balances include estimated costs?

Yes. An estimated expense counts toward balances immediately. The Balances screen warns when estimates are included because the final amounts may change. Confirm outstanding estimates and wait for pending entries to sync before settling the final amount.

What does settled up mean?

It means recorded net balances are zero at that point. It does not verify payments with your bank. New expenses, refunds or corrections can create a balance again.
