SHARED EXPENSE GUIDES

How to track shared expenses as a couple

Choose which costs you share and the split you both agree on. Then keep a clear record of who paid and what remains to settle.

Choose what belongs in your shared Book

Start with a small set of shared costs: rent, groceries, utilities or subscriptions. Decide together whether personal purchases stay outside the shared Book. You can leave a person out of a particular expense when they do not share that cost.

The person paying the bill and the people sharing the bill are separate choices. Paying $100 at the shop does not necessarily mean being responsible for the full $100.

Compare three ways to split a $100 cost

Different agreements for the same $100 expense
MethodPartner APartner B
Equal$50$50
60% / 40%$60$40
Exact amounts$70$30

These are examples of agreements, not a recommendation that one is right for every couple. LoopSplit also supports relative shares, such as 2 shares to 1. Percentages must total 100%, and exact amounts must add up to the expense total.

A worked example with two different payers

Alex pays $120 for groceries and Sam pays $80 for a utility bill. They agree to split both equally. Alex’s share of the $200 total is $100, and Sam’s share is $100.

Result: Alex paid $20 more than Alex’s share, so Sam owes Alex $20. Sam does not owe half of the groceries again without accounting for the utility bill Sam already paid.

This assumes no other expenses, refunds or repayments. If one entry changes, the balances change too. That is why recording both payers matters.

Keep the record together in LoopSplit

  1. Create one shared Book and invite your partner.
  2. Add each cost with its amount, description, actual payer and agreed participants.
  3. Choose equal, percentage, shares or exact amounts, and review the individual amounts.
  4. After the entries sync, check the balances together.
  5. Pay outside the app, then record the repayment.

You can correct an existing entry when a detail is wrong. Use Income for a refund received for the group; use Record Payment for a repayment between members.

Make recurring costs easier to revisit

Save rent or a subscription as a Loop so its schedule and split are ready next time. A due period waits in To Do for someone to check and record. It is not a bank payment or an automatic debit.

LoopSplit is free to start, without ads or daily expense limits. Free Books have up to three active Loops. Receipt photos are free to attach and view; the free scanning allowance is three scans total per account across devices.
